Welcome

The owners of the gardens listed in this website welcome garden lovers to visit their gardens.

Dunedin gardens thrive in a wide variety of sites and climates, from coastal areas to sheltered harbour-side microclimates and from exposed hill slopes to the plains of the Taieri. This results in a wide variety of wonderful gardens, with different styles and featured plants. Many gardens have outstanding displays of rhododendrons, which grow extremely well in Dunedin’s climate and have been celebrated by the Rhododendron Festival held annually for many years in October.  The quality of Dunedin’s gardens is also outstanding, with two of the six gardens in New Zealand that are classified by the New Gardens Trust as “Internationally Significant” being located in Dunedin: Dunedin Botanic Garden and Larnach Castle Garden.

The gardens listed in this website include public gardens and private gardens whose owners have made them available for the public to visit. The open gardens scheme is administered by the Dunedin Open Gardens Association with funding assistance from the Dunedin City Council.

The private gardens are open to visits during the year over the period given for each garden, but visitors need to phone first. Most gardens are also open without appointment on two weekends in October, usually the weekends before and after Labour Day weekend, when rhododendrons and other Spring flowers are at their best. These open days are advertised in local newspapers.

Most gardens charge a small fee which goes towards the setup and maintenance of this website and advertising of open days.
